Unit Overview:
Our video game programming unit prefaced how to make video games using block coding. It segued from the drone coding unit very well as both revolved around sensing coding and controlling an avatar. The first week we taught the girls how to make a simple maze game using one moving character. By using color sensors the game could make parameters so that the character could move on to different levels or restart from the beginning. This allowed the girls to be as creative as they wanted and personalize their game to their own stylistic expression.
Our second unit intertwined our ocean pollution theme to build awareness. We had them use multiple moving sprites to make an even more difficult single leveled maze game. With moving obstacles, the girls had to use more complex motion blocks to understand game physics and timing. The objective of the game was to get the character to clean up the ocean by collecting trash while dodging obstacles in order to get to the trash can.
