Unit Overview:
One of the our major points we wanted to convey in our camp that programming and computer automation doesn't have to being coding heavy. The vehicle for this message was 3D modeling and computer automated design (CAD). We taught the girls how to use the basic CAD program, Onshape. The unit taught problem solving, application of different tools at their disposal, and spatial reasoning and awareness. Our first lesson was how to make basic 3D shapes and how to cutout shapes. They learned how to make a personalized name tag and how to make different cutout shapes like stars, hearts, and flowers using pattern tools and the basic designing tools used in CAD.
The week after, we challenged them to uses the skills and shapes they learned to make an invention that positively affects ocean pollution either directly or indirectly. This reinforced the idea that any skill we learn in life can be used to help solve problems we encounter in the world.
