Project NEed:
Programming, engineering, leadership, and entreprenuership is such a male dominant field that many young girls feel discouraged to start the hobby or find interest in them. There are opportunities for girls to start but often times the window is so small they don't know where to start. As a group of girls who take interest in coding we didn't start until much later because of the lack of exposure and opportunities. We want to give young girls the chance to feel encouraged to join the field at their own convenience and so they can start on the right foot. Our camps will give them the experience of a friendly environment that isn't intimidated by male dominance. Our camps help them focus their scope of the essential skills of both programming and work in general. The camp will end with the culminating event for an all girls Hackathon to give them a feel for what coding camps and competitions are all about. Our project is developemental for everyone; the elementary grade girls develop teamwork, coding, and problem solving abilities, while our leadership took part in mentorship opportunities. This builds leadership in all the girls, no matter the age.
WHat is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is a lengthy event meant to test the participants collaborative and problem-solving skills. The girls will be given a problem and will have to work in groups with provided computers and equipment in order to come up with creative solutions.
Our Camp
In our curriculum, we will be using several different technologies. For the majority, we will be focusing on building and exploring PIPER computer kits. The girls will be able to work together to build their own computers and then engage with interactive elements and code.
Throughout the innovation camp, we will be teaching the participants not only about STEM, but also what it means to be a female entrepreneur and how to design and construct in any capacity.
The participants will be paired up and eventually work together in our culminating hackathon!
